Girls Inc. believes that all girls deserve the chance to lead healthy and productive lives. Girls Inc. is a passionate supporter of comprehensive sexual education. In order for young girls to make informed decisions about their bodies and sexual health they should have access to comprehensive education to protect them from unplanned pregnancies and STDs.
Girls Inc. has endorsed The Real Education for Healthy Youth Act (REHYA) sponsored by Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) which supports the health and well-being of young people by providing the comprehensive sexuality education they need to make informed, responsible, and healthy decisions throughout their lives.
Girls Inc. supports the Youth Access to Sexual Health Services Act(YASHS) sponsored by Senator Hirono (D-Hawaii), which would provide grants for programs that expand access to sexual health services for marginalized youth. Many young people, especially youth of color and those from low-income communities, face structural barriers that make it more difficult for them to access sexual health information and services and contribute to health disparities, including high rates of sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies. Under the YASHS Act, marginalized youth would get the comprehensive, medically accurate and youth friendly sexual health care they deserve.
Recently, the House passed the Labor, Health and Human services and Education (LHHS) appropriations bill for FY 2017 which completely eliminated both the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program (TPPP) and the Title X Family Planning Program. These programs are essential in supporting competitive grants to fund programs that reduce teen pregnancy across the United States. We will continue to advocate for funding for those programs.
